Many experienced Irish flute players prefer instruments designed and built by old masters such as Rudall and Rose. Since these flutes are so difficult to come by, today’s flute makers often replicate the old designs.
Michael’s D flute is adapted from plan number 592 in the John Dick collection of the Edinburgh University Collection of Musical Instruments (marked as Rudall & Rose – 5047 – No. 1 Tavistock Street, Covent Garden, London), and also from personal inspection of several Rudall and Rose flutes.
